ROWLEY — The Pine Grove School is taking steps to make sure its hallways, classrooms and playground are bully-free zones by having frank discussions with students about bullying and harassment. This was done last week during the school's community gathering meetings.
Principal Christine Kneeland and Assistant Principal Margot Lacey addressed groups of first- and second-graders and fourth- through sixth-graders on Thursday at the community gathering. These gatherings are the way in which the school regularly comes together to address certain issues or discuss a particular topic. Third-graders were on a field trip and will be addressed Thursday.
The theme of the meetings focuses on attitude, respect, responsibility and appropriate school conduct, and at this meeting, a primary emphasis on bullying and harassment. Students were also reminded of the school's three Rs: respect yourself, respect others and take responsibility for your actions. Parents were invited to join in the meetings.
"Bullying and harassment is something we do not tolerate here at the Pine Grove School," said Kneeland, who went on to explain to the students via a PowerPoint presentation exactly what bullying was. "Whether you are in the classroom, in the hall, on the playground or on the bus, if you think the situation isn't right, you need to enlist help from an adult," Kneeland told the students.
Students were told the difference between the physical, social, verbal and cyber aspects of bullying and what to do if they are being bullied. During a skit where Kneeland and Lacey acted out a bullying incident, the distinction between tattling and reporting in reference to bullying was described. Tattling, as was explained, is when one tells on someone to get them in trouble, while reporting was explained as telling the truth to try to help someone.
Students in the younger grades spoke up to ask about incidences to see if they were considered bullying, while the older grade-level students remained very quiet and serious, listening intently.

Electromagnetism show to light up fourth-graders
Representatives from the Museum of Science will be at the school for an in-school field trip on March 12 for the fourth-graders.
The presentation, which will be on electromagnetism, uses high-tech museum equipment to allow students to explore voltage, current, resistance and the interrelationship between magnetism and electricity. From watching someone's hair stand on end to creating a human extension cord to sending an electric current through several people, the students will learn all about electromagnetism in a hands-on way, courtesy of this field trip paid for by the PTO.
According to Pine Grove teacher Jillian Cronin, the curriculum frameworks for fourth-graders requires that the students learn about electricity, magnets and electromagnets.
"We figured what better way to see some real experiments in action than to bring in the museum of science," Cronin said.
"It's going to be a great extension of what the children have learned and will learn, and most interestingly, it helps students see how 'cool' science can be."

3 students read all 25 Mass. book award titles
Of the 33 Pine Grove students who participated in the Massachusetts Book Award program this year, three students — sixth-grader Rachel Bettencourt and fifth-graders Sophia Corsetti and Molly Gagnon — read all 25 books.
Participants include fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders who have been reading from this year's Massachusetts Book Award list of 25 books since the beginning of school. Those in the program will have a celebration party that includes pizza, cake and awards on Monday at 2 p.m.
At the celebration, the students will vote for their favorite book in the selections, which will be submitted to Salem State College, which administers the book award program, and added to the favorites of other Massachusetts schools. "The students are to be congratulated for working so independently this year," said Anne O'Brien, who is the librarian for all three district elementary schools. "Due to budget cuts this year, we didn't meet once a month for book club as in previous years, so this year we just introduced the kids to the book titles, and they independently followed through with their reading. A great job was done by all students!"

Given the recent events that have occurred at Triton Regional Middle School and Salisbury Elementary School, I wanted to inform you of the plan of action that we, as a school community, are taking here at Pine Grove School. Ms. Lacey and I had met with the faculty and staff on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the recent incident at Triton Regional Middle School. As a faculty we had decided to speak with the children or classes on an as needed basis to reassure them of their safety. Today, Ms. Lacey and I met with the faculty immediately after dismissal to further discuss the recent situation that occurred at Salisbury Elementary School. The following steps are planned for February 4, 2010:
- In grades K-2 the teachers will speak with their class if students appear anxious or frightened regarding the situations. These conversations will be developmentally appropriate.
- In grades 3-6 the teachers will address importance of working together to maintain a safe and secure school community. They will encourage the students to speak with an adult if they feel frightened or unsafe. This will be done through class and group discussions, morning meetings, and future community gatherings.
- Ms. Lacey, Mrs. Blanchette, Ms. Odle and I will all be available to meet with classes or individual students at the discretion of the teachers.
We encourage you to speak with your child(ren) as you know them best. Please reiterate to your child(ren) the importance of speaking to an adult if they witness or experience bullying or unsafe situations.
The Pine Grove School Safety Committee, which includes both the Rowley Police and Fire Departments, will continue to review procedures and protocols for ensuring school safety. We will continue to provide on-going communication and information as it becomes necessary.
Please do not hesitate to call if you have any further questions.
