Hands-on learning about the Industrial Revolution

Pine Grove fourth-graders will head to Lowell today to visit the Tsongas Industrial History Park to learn about the American Industrial Revolution. The National Park is a hands-on center where students learn through activities and tours of the sites where history and science took place.

Students will join in on the "history" by weaving, working on an assembly line, role-playing immigrants, voting in a town meeting or becoming inventors. Science projects offered at the center include manipulating simple machines, creating canal systems and test water wheels, measuring water quality, tracing the flow of groundwater pollution or discovering river cleanup techniques.

  • The last PTO meeting of the school year will be held today at 7 p.m. in the school library.
  • Weather permitting, the third-graders will take a walking field trip on Friday to Rowley Town Common to have a picnic lunch and play field games. The students will then go to White Farms Dairy in Ipswich to enjoy special ice cream treats with their classmates. Rain date is June 8.
  • Tomorrow, RPEF-sponsored visitor Mallory Bagwell of The Movement Company will lead the sixth-graders through a Hot Air Hype presentation, culminating in the students constructing a miniature hot air balloon. This program demonstrates the elements of flight — pressure, gravity, drag and lift. The visit is sponsored by the Rowley Public Education Fund.
    • Teams of students will build balloons that are one-fifteenth the size of a regular hot air balloon and then head outdoors after lunch to launch their creations of 4-foot-tall tissue balloons that will be flown to heights of 40 to 300 feet.
  • The RPEF Golfing for a Cause tournament will take place on Friday at Far Corner Golf on Main Street in Boxford, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Monies raised from this annual fundraiser benefit educational enrichment programs for the children at Pine Grove School.  There's still time to join in the fun. Contact Kate Scalley, president of RPEF, at 978-948-2930 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for details.
  • The school store will be open before school on Thursday and Friday. Those in kindergarten through third grade can visit on Thursday, while fourth- through sixth-graders are invited to the store on Friday.
  • Planning for summertime? Pine Grove School offers a daily summer camp at the school that includes games, crafts, sports and water play during themed-weeks that include pirates, reptiles and music. Children can attend for two, three or five days and need not be students at Pine Grove to attend the camp. Contact Karen Miele at 978-518-1334 for more information.
