Elementary Instrumental Music Program

E-mail Print PDF

The Triton Regional School District provides a wonderful opportunity for your child to receive instrumental music lessons in the elementary schools. Triton’s instrumental music program begins in the 4th grade and is an excellent opportunity that supplements your child’s academics, provides them with a creative and social outlet, and cultures talents that they will continually share with their friends, family and community.  Instruments offered for instruction are flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn/euphonium, tuba and percussion.

Every student receives a weekly 20 minute long instrument lesson. Lessons are brief in duration so students do not miss too much class work.  The lesson times will change every week so students will not keep missing the same academics.  Smaller lessons groups and times allow for your child to have more individualized instruction.  If possible, lessons are usually grouped so that students will be from the same grade, class, and so they socially work well with each other. Additional instruction time is available to students who may be struggling or have missed their lessons.

All instrumental students also attend a weekly large band rehearsal where students perform exciting repertoire, learn ensemble techniques, work with a conductor and explore how their instrument fits into the band community. The Advanced Band performs in two seasonal concerts, an all day Triton Arts Festival and concert, and in local parades. The Beginner Band performs in the end of the year Spring Concert.

This year, the club activity fee for ALL instrumental students will again be $100 for the 2009-2010 school year. Checks must be submitted by the first instrumental lesson and written out to TRSD. Financial assistance is available for families who are eligible. An instrumental lesson book will be provided for your child, but all students must purchase their own instrument and supplies such as reeds, valve, or slide oil. School loaned instruments are available for families receiving financial assistance.

Beginner MusiciansIn September, enrolled beginners will meet in small groups to explore and assist their decision to which instrument they are passionate about and that best suits them.  I encourage students to try ALL of the instruments regardless of stereotypes or what they have heard about them.  Once students have made their selection, they will be scheduled for beginning lessons starting in October.  In early October, Music & Arts (formally Coffey Music) will be visiting in the auditorium of Newbury Elementary School for those who wish to rent an instrument or purchase supplies. If you are currently in possession of an instrument please indicate this on the form.

Advanced Musicians:   Students who have completed a beginning year of instrumental music will have their first advanced group lesson and large band rehearsal during the first full week of school in September.  A Stage Band of select musicians meets every Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.  All advanced students must fill out this form for next year

We are assuming all previous band students are continuing next year. If your child wishes to not continue next year, or they wish to try a new instrument, please contact Mr. Carubia as soon as possible ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
